Middlesex Beat Oxfordshire in Middleton Cup
06/04/2013
What a positive start to the 2013 Middleton Cup Campaign. For the first time this millennium, at the 5th attempt, Middlesex have beaten their rivals from Oxfordshire CBA at home in the Middleton Cup and the result is almost the perfect start Everyone involved can be proud of their efforts yesterday at Bush Hill Park BC as Middlesex won on 3 rinks to secure a 122-110 victory and secure 16 points to the visitors 6. From the off yesterday the 2 sides seemed to have very different approaches to the tactical side of the game. Oxfordshire met in the far corner of the green for a lengthy team talk whilst Middx opted not to have a group talk preferring to allow Team Manager Brian Hearn and Captain John Sweeney to talk to players one on one. As the players’ names were read out the Oxfordshire boys loudly cheered and clapped their skips names, Middx were rather more reserved and muted in their approach. When the game started, Oxfordshire’s chief cheer leader the ebullient Mark Charlett went around high fiving and cajoling everyone down to the tea ladies and reminding them of their duties in getting off to a positive start to put Middx on the back foot. Clearly Mark’s efforts initially went un heeded as it was Middlesex who got off to the more productive start and they led 35-23 at 5 ends. Oxfordshire fought back to lead by 2 (60-58) at 10 ends but the name was nip and tuck with Middx edging back in front 87-82 at 15 ends with 2 rinks pulling away. At 18 ends Middx had extended their lead to 11 (108-97) and they fought off a determined Oxfordshire rally to retain that lead and finish winning by 12. There were lots of positives for Middlesex. Ron LeLeux (West Ealing) gave by all accounts an almost faultless skipping display of both drawing and attacking bowls, he was superbly supported by Club colleague Paul Cater and host club duo of Roger Watkinson and Ernie Rudston as they routed their opposition 29-12. There was also a superb performance from the newly formed rink of Chris Cleaver (North London), Richard Southgate (Harrow), Alistair Frankland (West Finchley) and Darren Gosnell (Broomfield) who won 29-14. Mention should also be made of the ever ice cool Perry Cook (Poplar) who turned a Middlesex wood in for shot with the last bowl of his game to secure a hard fought 14-12 rink win. After the game the Oxfordshire Chairperson joked that the warm weather had done much to confound them as they had done all their training in the cold and wet! Brian Elbourn (Harrow) was playing his first game at Middleton Cup level and will receive his red flash at this week’s friendly with Essex. Mention should also be made at this point of the superb meal laid on by Bush Hill Park’s ladies, Dave Pitt (Masonian) may well still be there tucking in!! In the days other game Hampshire beat the Isle of Wight 18-4 to set up an early top of the table game next Saturday at Artherley BC
